Tonight was our most New Yorkiest night to date. But before I explain, check out this link, to the trailer of a new documentary film called The King of Kong.
The film is a well done (if off the beaten track) documentary--the filmmakers stumbled upon a quirky group of video game nerds and they tell the story of the the reigning Donkey Kong champion being challenged by a nice, normal family guy from the west coast. The nice guy turns out to be Steve Wiebe, who was in the same fraternity as Brett in college.
Steve and his wife Nicole are here in New York for a few days doing interviews and promotions for the documentary which will be released on Friday. We went to see a screening of the film tonight at the Museum of the Moving Image. We recognized some other friends in the film (Hi Gina and Aaron, you looked great!) and after the movie Steve played Donkey Kong for everyone at a reception in the museum, which was full of movie memorabilia and all sorts of exhibits and commentary on movies. Brett and I got to play Donkey Kong too, but must fess up that we really stink at it. Ms. Pac Man was more our game of choice from that chapter of our lives...but that's another documentary altogether.
In any case, it was great fun and the film is quite interesting too, especially if you are at all interested in classic video games. You won't believe the characters that crawled out from under the rocks when they discovered someone was challenging their 20 year old DK record. So check it out--sounds like there is a good chance it will be made into a feature film (with actors) in the next year.
