The trip yesterday was fine--we are certainly not travelling very light, between the fact that the kids burn out on carrying their own luggage after two minutes and the other fact that we brought our dog with us. Aside from several comic moments with mountains of luggage on smart carts that invariably came tumbling down, all was well. In addition to falling asleep on subways, Jonah seems to always fall asleep right at the end of the flight--so I carried him for a while on my back through the airport while Sherpa Brett carried all the carry-on bags. He is so funny when sleepy--just a big huge pile of dead weight and you can't wake him up.
We picked up our SUV rental car, which brings us to the de-greening part of the title...I have been trying to just let it go the past two months, how many paper towels we go through in a day and how we can't find any organic produce and that we are consuming vast quantities of preservative-laden, full of hormones meat. We are using disposable batteries like they are going out of style since our battery chargers are all in storage. In addition, the kids have become addicted to Dunkin Donuts (they seem to be everywhere in NY, and we used them as bribes to get through long days of apartment hunting) and they watch television every single day--for copious stretches of time while we try to get our business done. I suppose our Ecological Footprint is fairly small even still--we don't own a car anymore, and certainly when they are available and convenient we use cloth napkins and buy local and organic. But still, circumstances we find ourselves in make it nearly impossible to hold to things we value as important--and when it comes right down to it a little nitrates and screentime and fried lumps of fat and sugar never *really* hurt anyone, right?
So, when you picture us now, don't think of the healthy snack family riding around in a Subaru listening to old Dead bootlegs while munching raw almonds and heading out for a hike--Think of a loaded XTerra full of donuts and Pringles and kids describing plots from their favorite TV shows as the family heads out to dinner at....Applebee's and a trip to the mall, getting 12 miles a gallon all the while.
