Finally, we ventured out...

You may have noticed that I turned our first email home into a blog entry. I thought it might be easier to set this up as a blog instead of clogging your inboxes with wordy accounts that may or may not be interesting to you in the long run. This way, you check in on us if you wish. I couldn't back date the first entry, it was originally written on January 1.
Not a whole lot has happened in the past week, mostly the kids and I slept and experienced delirious fever-induced states of altered being. Seriously, we had the worst flu. Barely left the apartment for 4 or 5 days. Watched copious amounts of TV. It is incredible that Brett didn't get sick too, he discontinued his usual practice of finishing everyone's leftovers, and in general tried to be in a different room than the rest of us while consuming every vitamin known to man several times a day. It worked, he seemed to stay healthy.
The good news is that Brett's job is going well. He likes it and is excited about getting more settled in and actually getting to some real work (as opposed to HR stuff and orientation type activities). He has figured out his commute fairly well, it takes him about 45 minutes from start to finish, including some waiting time for buses and trains. And a short walk once he gets there.
The not so good news is that on our budget (which if you must know is WAY more than our mortgage in Portland) does not get us a very impressive apartment in Manhattan. We have spent hour upon neurotic hour combing the computer for apartment ads...many of them are so small and unimpressive. We had a Manhattan real estate tour on Friday. That was cool in that someone who actually knows the city drove us around showing us things for 4 hours. We didn't find any apartments we love in our price range, but at least we know the neighborhoods better and now we know what to look for.
Saturday it was 72 degrees here! We took long walks with the dog and the kids played at the playground a block away. It was teeming with kids, none of whom seemed overly friendly. Maya tried to make a friend and the replies were things like "I don't want to play with you, I'm playing with these other girls." Or even blank stares. Kind of sad, but I guess I'm OK with that, if we made friends here we would just have to leave them in a month or two when we move.
We also got our first pieces of mail here (thanks Grandma and Grandpa Reeves!) which means we were able to get library cards (since the mail shows we actually live here). Woo hoo. Unlike what we are used to, each card can only check out 5 books at a time. I guess we were lucky with our Wilsonville 80 book "heavy volume" user classification. That is going to be an adjustment.
OK, it is way late, I'm off to bed.
