Everyone told us to check out the
Outer Banks of North Carolina (or OBX) at least once. So on Brett's very first weekend day off of the summer, we got up early, found our old favorite breakfast place from Florida,
The Waffle House, and hit the road. We must have overdone this place last time--all of a sudden we noticed how greasy and not really that great the food was. Maybe just this particular site? And nobody called us
"Baby" when we walked in the door either. Very disappointing.
After breakfast we arrived at
Jockey Ridge, all set to climb the sand dunes. But we pulled into the parking lot and within minutes of our arrival a huge rainstorm drenched everything. Big time. For about half an hour. We amused ourselves by watching all the people run barefoot and soaking back to their cars after their climb on the dunes. The parking lot emptied out and we still sat there. Pondering what to do. Finally it stopped. We threw our shoes in the car and headed out. It was very cool. Much cooler than I thought it would be, but in more ways than one. As in cold. And damp. And very windy.

But after our drive, we decided we needed to chance it. Simon had already shown us that he doesn't mind rain. Once at the Aquarium we all got drenched on the nature trail and he slept through the whole thing. Can we just say that the weather here is a bit unpredictable?

I love the scale of this picture of Brett at the top--you can see the water on the other side, it is quite a view. But windy up there, and we were trying not to get the camera wet. After eating lunch at the worst Mexican restaurant in the world, (please, don't ask for any details), we found another mini-golf place, this one with a train ride to the top. It sort of salvaged our day. Well, it was one of those days that the kids thought was fun, but the adults knew could have been so much better.
